At 3.7 million square miles, China is one of the biggest countries in the world. Over 1.3 billion people live in China, making one in every five people in the world Chinese. Its history stretches back over 4,000 years, and is one of the longest in the world.

The main language is Mandarin, also known as guoyu, which means national speech. Other types of Chinese include Cantonese, Hakka, Xiang, Min, Gan and Wu. Even though there are lots of spoken languages, they are all written the same way, so everyone can understand them. Writing is treated like an art form in China, and the best writers can get paid very well.

The main religions or beliefs are:

Buddhism: The biggest religion in China. Buddhists believe in a cycle of rebirth, and that everything we do has an impact on our lives in the short or long term.

Taoism: Tao is a natural force which contains all sides of nature, both the good and bad.

Confucianism: A set of social and personal rules written by Kong Zi over 2,500 years ago. They deal with things like respect for your parents and how to be a good ruler.

China has been achieving an impressive rate of development of its economy and increase in its regional / global economic and political influence. There has been speculation about its future potential to act as a major driver of the global economy, and whether its methods will provide the model that others will now seek to emulate. China plays an important role in our future.
